American Express Travel: Customer reviews & comments

Travel can be costly both if not planned well.  Before finally deciding on a service, take a look at the reviews given by customers about American Express Travel.

“Had to plan a slightly complicated trip to Italy in October 09, and turned to American Express. Barbara is an Italy Specialist - she's traveled there more than 50 times so really really knows about a great many things. She's friendly, organized, and very responsive - I set everything up by email but she always said I could call if I wanted. She booked us into fantastic hotels (there are hundreds of hotels in Rome, for example, so wading through thousands of reviews is overwhelming), was on top of every detail, and made the whole planning process stress-free and enjoyable. It's easy to book hotels, cars, etc. online these days, but if you are doing something complicated or not just 'pick days and click here', she's absolutely the one to go to. Highly recommend!” - cindy r.  Dorchester, MA

“My wife & I have had platinum cards for a couple for years now and I think the card is marginally worth the fee for us though some of the benefits of the card really are overstated.
- Membership Rewards points: I've watched my point balance climb into six figures and thought "wow, I'll bet I can get something really cool for these!" - wrong. The points actually have a very low trade value for merchandise and I've stopped viewing this as a serious benefit.
- Concierge: mixed feelings but ultimately positive. My wife's luggage was lost by Alitalia (Italian for "worst airline in the history of the universe") and the concierge was able to coax the airline into finding them and bringing them to our hotel in Rome. She sent me frequent EMAIL's updating me on the status of their return. Also, a concierge was able to get us diner reservations and theatre tickets in the days leading up to and including New Years Eve in Times Square. On the other hand, I've had less positive experiences with Platinum concierges simply pasting a list of restaurants from a web site when I've requested recommendaiton & reservations. I will say that one constant is that the concierges make no effort whatsoever to save you any money on anything: the most expensive limo service in the yellow pages, guides, restaurants, tours, etc. Platinum Travel Services is better at that if you tell them up front you'd like them to consider value.
- Hotels: I've found this depends on where you go. I've goten some good Ritz Carleton upgrades & Starwood (although I think that's ended). On the other hand the clerk at the Econolodge in Valdosta, Georgia ("spend a night, not a fortune") was not at all impressed with my Platinum card.
- Shopping: worthless unless you regularly shop at Saks, Nieman Marcus, etc, anyway. This is pretty clearly a marketing thing.
- Airline companion free ticket: I've not used this domestically. I did try to use the international version but the cost difference is still huge (5 to 1 in my case).
- Airline Clubs: this is the reason we got the card in the first place and what ultimately makes it worth the cost. I like in a Delta hub city and almost always fly Delta. Although the number of Crown Rooms is dwindling as Delta struggles having the use of one is very nice. If this benefit were to be discontinued (like the Starwood preferred reward) they card really wouldn't be worth the annual fee for me.

I think ultimately it depends on individuals habits and spending patterns. If you're going to stay at a Ritz Carleton anyway it's worth it. If you are going to buy front row theatre tickets anyway it's worth it. Ditto for international first class.
